How to make a song your ringtone

Any song, any phone, free and in about two minutes. First make the ringtone, then set it.

Watch: setting the ringtone on iPhone (iOS 26) and Android, in 40 seconds.

Short answer: open a free ringtone maker like the MeloCut Ringtone Maker, pick your song, select the best part (under 30 seconds) and download it. On iPhone, open the file in Files and tap Share → Use as Ringtone. On Android, go to Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone and add the file.

Step 1: Make the ringtone

  1. Open the Ringtone Maker in Safari or Chrome. No app or account needed.
  2. Tap Choose a file and pick a song, or a video from your gallery.
  3. Drag on the waveform to select the part you want, usually just before the chorus. The first 29 seconds are selected for you.
  4. Choose M4R for iPhone or MP3 for Android, press Make ringtone, then Download.

Step 2: Set it on your phone

iPhone (iOS 26 or newer)

  1. Open Files → Downloads and tap the ringtone.
  2. Tap Share → Use as Ringtone. Done.

Older iPhone, or the option is missing? See set any song as your iPhone ringtone (GarageBand and fixes).

Android

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone.
  2. Tap +, My sounds or Add ringtone and pick the file from Downloads.

On a Samsung phone the menu names are different: see custom ringtone on Samsung.

Tips for a good ringtone

  1. Start on the hook. You often hear only the first 2 seconds before you answer, so skip quiet intros.
  2. Keep it short. 15 to 29 seconds is plenty; it loops until you pick up.
  3. Leave the fades on so it doesn't start or stop abruptly.
  4. Too quiet? Turn up Volume in Effects before you download.

Questions and answers

How do I make a song my ringtone for free?

Use a free online ringtone maker like MeloCut: pick the song, select up to 30 seconds and download it, then set it in your phone's sound settings (Android) or with Files → Share → Use as Ringtone (iPhone).

Can I make a ringtone without an app?

Yes. MeloCut works in Safari and Chrome, so there is nothing to install, and iOS 26 can set the ringtone straight from the Files app.

How long can a ringtone be?

For the iPhone Files app method, under 30 seconds. With GarageBand or a computer, up to 40 seconds. Android has no strict limit.

M4R for iPhone (MP3 also works with the Files app method) and MP3 for Android.
