Custom ringtone not showing on iPhone? 7 fixes
Made a ringtone but it is not in the list, or the Use as Ringtone button is missing? It is almost always one of these.
Short answer: the ringtone is usually too long (it must be under 30 seconds for the Files app), from Apple Music (copy-protected), not fully downloaded, or your iPhone runs an iOS version older than 26. Fix the cause below and add it again.
The 7 usual causes
- It's 30 seconds or longer. The Files app only accepts sounds under 30 seconds. Open the song again in the Ringtone Maker: it selects 29 seconds for you.
- Your iPhone is older than iOS 26. "Use as Ringtone" only exists on iOS 26 and newer. Check in Settings → General → About. On older versions use GarageBand (see the iPhone ringtone guide).
- You looked in the wrong menu. In the Share sheet, scroll the list of actions to the bottom, or tap More. It can be below Save to Files and Add Tags.
- The song is from Apple Music or another streaming app. Those songs are copy-protected and can never become ringtones. Use a song file you own, or a sound from your own video.
- The download didn't finish. Open the file in Files and play it. If it doesn't play, download it again and wait for Safari's download arrow to finish.
- Wrong file type. Use M4R, M4A or MP3. Renaming a file's extension doesn't convert it: make a real M4R with MP3 to M4R.
- Copied from a computer, but it's over 40 seconds or not M4R. Ringtones synced with Finder or iTunes must be M4R and at most 40 seconds.
Still missing?
Close the Files app completely and open it again, or restart the iPhone. Then add the ringtone once more with Share → Use as Ringtone and look in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone, at the top of the list.
