What is M4R?

M4R is the file type iPhones use for ringtones. Inside it's a normal AAC audio file, like M4A, just with a different name so the iPhone knows it's a ringtone. That's why a ringtone has to be short: under 30 seconds to set it from the Files app on iOS 26, or up to 40 seconds with a computer or GarageBand.

After converting

On iOS 26 or newer, open the M4R in the Files app and tap Share → Use as Ringtone. On older iPhones, use GarageBand or a computer. The iPhone ringtone guide has every step.

Questions and answers

How do I convert MP3 to M4R?

Open the MP3 here, pick up to 40 seconds (under 30 for the Files app), press Make ringtone and download the M4R.

Why is my M4R only 40 seconds?

iPhone ringtones are limited to 40 seconds, and the Files app method needs under 30, so the converter keeps your selection within that.

Can I just rename an MP3 to .m4r?

No. The audio has to be AAC inside an MP4 container. Renaming an MP3 does not convert it, and the iPhone will not accept it.

The M4R does not show up in my ringtones. What now?

Check it is under 30 seconds for the Files app method, and that you used Share → Use as Ringtone. Older iPhones need GarageBand or a computer.

Can I make a text tone too?

Yes. After adding it, choose it under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Text Tone.
