256 kbps is a good choice for music.

Press Convert, then Download.

When M4A is useful

Some Apple apps and workflows expect M4A: GarageBand and iMovie projects, Apple's own podcast and audiobook tools, and older iPhone ringtone guides that start from an M4A file. For everything else, MP3 plays on more devices.

About quality

Converting an MP3 to M4A can't add back what the MP3 left out, so use the same or a slightly higher bitrate than the original. If you need an iPhone ringtone, convert straight to M4R instead.

Questions and answers

Is M4A better than MP3?

At the same bitrate AAC usually sounds a little better, but converting an existing MP3 does not improve it.

Will M4A play on Android and Windows?

Yes, on most modern phones and computers. Some older car stereos and players only support MP3.

Can I use the M4A as an iPhone ringtone?

Convert to M4R instead with MP3 to M4R. It is the same audio, prepared as a ringtone.

Does the M4A keep album art?

No. Metadata and album art are removed from the output for privacy.
