How to change your ringtone back to default

Tired of your custom ringtone? Here is how to go back, on iPhone and Android.

Short answer: iPhone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone and pick the tone marked (Default). Android: Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone and pick the default tone.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.
  2. Scroll to the built-in ringtones and tap the one marked (Default), or any other you like.
  3. A contact still plays the old sound? Open Contacts → the person → Edit → Ringtone and choose Default.

Android

  1. Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone (Samsung: Sounds and vibration → Ringtone).
  2. Pick the phone's original tone; it is usually at the top or marked as default.
  3. For a contact: open the contact → ⋮ → Set ringtone (or Edit → Ringtone on Samsung) → Default.

Removing old custom ringtones

An unused custom ringtone does no harm in the list. Ringtones made with GarageBand can be removed in GarageBand: long-press any song → Share → Ringtone → Your Ringtones → Edit. On Android, delete the file from Files → Ringtones or Downloads.

Want a new one instead? Make a song your ringtone in about two minutes.

Questions and answers

Does changing my ringtone reset contact ringtones?

No. Contacts with their own ringtone keep it until you change it in the contact.
