How to make your own voice a ringtone

Your kid shouting "Daddy, pick up!", your own catchphrase or a funny line from a friend. Here's how to turn a recording into a ringtone.

Short answer: record it with Voice Memos (iPhone) or Recorder (Android), open the recording in the Ringtone Maker, select the line, turn on Auto loudness and AI noise removal, download it and set it as your ringtone.

Step 1: Record it

  1. Use Voice Memos on iPhone or the Recorder app on Android. Hold the phone a hand's width away and record in a quiet room.
  2. Say it a few times, so you can pick the best take.
  3. iPhone: tap the memo → ⋯ → Save to Files.

Step 2: Make the ringtone

  1. Open the recording in the Ringtone Maker.
  2. Select only the best take. Start right on the first word: you often hear just the first two seconds.
  3. Open Effects and turn on Auto loudness and AI noise removal. Phone recordings are quiet and a ringtone has to cut through.
  4. Download it: M4R for iPhone, MP3 for Android.

Step 3: Set it

iPhone (iOS 26): Files → Share → Use as Ringtone. Android: Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone → +. Full steps in make a song your ringtone. Put it on one person only with a contact ringtone.

Ideas

A kid's voice for a parent, a partner's laugh, a pet, a voice note from a grandparent, or a friend's catchphrase for their contact. Record people only with their permission.
