How to remove vocals from a song
Make a karaoke or instrumental version of a song for free. Here is how, and what results to expect.
Step by step
- Open the Vocal Remover and choose a stereo studio song from your device.
- The vocal remover is already on. Press Preview with effects to listen.
- If the bass got too quiet, raise Bass in Effects a little.
- Press Convert and Download your karaoke track.
How it works
In most studio songs the lead vocal is placed in the middle of the stereo mix, while guitars, keys and backing vocals are spread to the left and right. The vocal remover cancels what's in the middle and keeps the sides. It's fast and runs on your own device, but it isn't AI stem separation, so the results depend on how the song was mixed.
What to expect
- Works best: pop, rock and hip-hop studio songs with one lead singer.
- Works less well: songs with lots of reverb on the voice, live recordings and old mono recordings. MeloCut warns you when a file is mono.
- Side effect: bass and kick drum are often in the middle too, so they get quieter. Raising Bass brings some of it back.
Tips
Start from the best-quality file you have; a 320 kbps MP3 or a WAV gives a cleaner result than a small, compressed file. For practicing, you can also slow the karaoke track down with the slow down tool without changing its pitch.
Questions and answers
Can I remove vocals for free?
Yes. The MeloCut Vocal Remover is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Why can I still hear some of the singer?
Reverb and backing vocals are often spread to the sides of the mix, so they stay. It depends on how the song was mixed.
Can it remove the music and keep the voice?
Not this tool. For cleaning up a voice recording, use the AI Noise Remover instead.
